Natural Supplements for PetsNatural Supplements for PetsOur family includes a 16 year old cat named Jock. In 2005 Jock was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. The Vet gave him a life expectancy of 6 months to a year! "The best treatment option was a low protein prescription diet."

Jock is an important part of our family, so we researched his condition and learned that new studies were showing the old defense of restricting protein might be doing more harm than good. Supplements like fish oil and probiotics were showing great promise in slowing the progression of the disease.

So we started Jock on a protocol of nutritional supplements and dietary changes. Three years after that original diagnosis he's still going strong! You can't cure kidney disease, but we know we have added quality years to Jock's life.

If nutritional therapy could help Jock, it could help your pet.

HOW NATURAL PRODUCTS CAN HELP

What our pets' bodies receive in the form of food, nutrients, toxins, etc. largely dictates their health. A dog or cat that consumes high quality food and receives the necessary nutrients will be healthier than one whose diet is depleted or is exposed to toxic substances.

So when a pet becomes ill, it makes sense to consider natural substances that can support the healing process. Obviously some conditions are going to require prescription medications, but natural supplements and dietary changes can work wonders on their own or offer additional support to conventional medicine.

CONSIDER THESE SITUATIONS

CANCER - If your dog or cat is diagnosed with cancer, you will be faced with some difficult choices. Do you opt for surgery? Do you try chemotherapy or radiation? Whether you decide on conventional practices, alternative approaches or a combination of both, diet and supplements should not be over looked.

Pets with cancer can greatly benefit from natural adjunct therapy - even if it just means helping them maintain a higher quality of life. Dietary changes along with supplements like medicinal mushrooms (as found in K9 Immunity) and fish oil can support the recovery process and help improve the quality of life for many pets with cancer. For more information about how natural supplements and diet can help your dog or cat, click here.

My loving little boy is now in remission for 2 years and 10 months and has never looked better. [The vet and oncologist] truly believe we are keeping Mickey alive with K-9 immunity and all the other herbs. We thank god everyday for having Mickey with us, he is truly a unique little guy; smart, silly and affectionate. Thank you K-9 Immunity for giving Mickey a second chance.

SKIN PROBLEMS - Veterinarians state the most common complaint reported is skin issues like excessive itching, hot spots, bald spots, excessive shedding, foul odor, etc. Although skin issues can be the result of more serious disease, the most common causes of skin problems are allergies and nutritional deficiencies. Since the cause of skin problems is not always obvious, many veterinarians rely on corticosteroids to treat skin issues. Steroids are not recommended for long term use because they negatively impact every organ in the body and can cause devastating health issues down the road. For help determining what is causing your dog or cat's skin problems, click here.

"When we got [our 2 year old black lab] he had "hot spots" around his neck, on his hindquarters and an area the size of a dinner plate on his back near the tail. He was immediately put on NUPRO and within 3 weeks all the spots were cleared up. Most amazingly was that within 6 weeks the hair had grown in and you could not tell he had ever had "hot spots"!
- Christina Leno

DIGESTIVE DISORDERS - Conditions like IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) are still a relative mystery for modern medicine. IBD is a potentially fatal disease because it prevents nutrients from being absorbed and it effectively "starves" the dog or cat. On the other hand, IBS is more of a nuisance than a health risk, but it is still something that is best controlled.

Although the two conditions are very different, they both respond well to natural supplementation. One of the best known remedies for these conditions is Slippery Elm. Combined with diet and other supplements, Slippery Elm could get to the root of your dog or cat's digestive problems and greatly reduce or stop symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. LIVER DISEASE - Liver disease is a complex disease that has many facets and can be difficult to manage properly, but it is important to know that it is not always fatal. Fortunately the liver is the one organ that has the ability to regenerate and both holistic and conventional practitioners agree - nutritional supplementation is the superior approach.

Initially the focus should be on getting a correct diagnosis, which often requires a biopsy. Many types of liver disease depend wholly on dietary and nutritional support for management and recovery. The steps toward recovery may include detoxification by fasting, dietary changes to reduce ammonia and vitamin and mineral supplementation to compensate for the liver's inability to synthesize its own. Natural remedies like Milk Thistle, sAMe and digestive enzymes have also shown to be of great benefit. Click here for more information on how diet and supplements can help dogs and cats with liver disease.

"Pepe had his liver function test done. The vet said he had improved tremendously even though his count was still a little higher than normal. He recommended we keep him on the Sam-e and milk thistle treatment and wants to retest him in about three months with him fasting for that test. We are so glad he is doing so much better and not a death's door. He is back to his old self. Pepe still has a lot of love left to give and a lot of love to be received. We are so glad we found your website that offered us hope. We are telling everyone about your website and all the wonderful products you offer. Thanks for being there." - L. Skinner, GA

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS - UTIs are common in both dogs and cats. Urinary tract conditions break down into 3 basic categories: bladder infection/inflammation, bladder stones/crystals and urinary tract blockages. Many pets are plagued by recurrent infections and these conditions can be serious.

For dogs, most infections can be avoided by making dietary adjustments and adding nutritional supplements. If a pet's diet is either too acidic or too alkaline, crystals or stones can form and inflame the bladder or cause blockages. Nutritional supplements can be used to help regulate the diet as well as provide relief during an episode. Learn more . . .

Cats are more prone to UTIs (also referred to as FLUTD or FUS) than dogs. In addition to the standard infection, many cats can suffer from "idiopathic cystitis", which means the inflammation is not caused by infection and the cause is unknown. Most veterinarians believe idiopathic cystitis is caused primarily by stress. There are many things you can do to help your cat recover from UTIs and reduce or eliminate occurrences. See our section on UTIs in cats to learn more.

"My vet suggested Vitamin C after my cat developed urinary blockage. Your product seemed to make him feel better and it's been at least a year with no recurring episodes."
- F. Black

"I got Daily Greens for my cat with kidney problems. Gave her more energy and helped her through her bout with FUS.  My vet thinks they are great.
- J. Stanole

KIDNEY DISEASE OR KIDNEY FAILURE - Kidney disease in pets goes by many names: Chronic Kidney Disease, CKD, Chronic Renal Failure, CRF and Renal Disease are a few examples. Kidney disease in dogs and cats is one of the most common health problems, especially in older pets. Kidney disease is not reversible because the kidney does not regenerate, so if your dog or cat has been diagnosed with kidney disease it is imperative that you start taking steps immediately to slow the progression and attempt to save the remaining kidney tissue.

There are a number of things you can do to help a pet with kidney disease. Proper hydration, nutritional supplements and diet changes should all be utilized to ensure the best result. Depending on the stage of kidney failure, your veterinarian may recommend subcutaneous fluids to help flush the kidneys. Providing plenty of fresh drinking water is also important. Nutritional supplements like probiotics, fish oil and digestive enzymes can do much to help your pet's body lessen the burden on the kidneys, potentially slowing the progression.

Knowing what to feed a pet with kidney disease is very important. A diet low in protein is often recommended, but this is somewhat outdated thinking. According to new studies, restricting protein in the early stages of renal failure may actually be detrimental. Restricting phosphorus is the real key to providing a diet that is suitable for a pet with kidney disease.

Our 4 Step Wellness Plan puts everything together for you including diet and lifestyle changes along with the right supplements and to help your dog or cat deal with kidney disease. Click here - Wellness Plan for Dogs or Wellness Plan for Cats

"Since adding the kidney support kit to Sox's breakfast, he is making a dramatic turn around. We thought we were going to lose him when he was first diagnosed. He's back to his normal, active self again." - L. Bridges, CA

Rocky is doing quite well... Thanks to the Kidney Kit and all the info from your website. - D. Albritton, NC

CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS - Dogs have more problems with recurring ear infections than cats. Breeds like Cocker Spaniel and Golden Retriever tend to have the worst issues because their "droopy" ears provide the moist, dark environment that allows yeast and bacteria to grow.

If you have tried rounds of antibiotics, steroids or topical creams with no lasting results, your dog is probably suffering from an underlying allergy. Chronic or recurrent ear infections are usually caused by an improper immune response that starts a chain reaction resulting in red, itchy, swollen ears. Although antibiotics and/or steroids may be required initially to get the problem under control, they do not supply a long term solution.

Yeast overgrowth, caused by allergies or an underlying disease like diabetes, is the most common cause of chronic ear infections. To break the cycle of ear pain, itching and ear odor it is necessary to identify and eliminate the allergy (most commonly a food ingredient) and introduce anti-inflammatory and yeast controlling supplements like fish oil, probiotics and digestive enzymes. These steps combined with good ear hygiene is often successful a reducing or eliminating the recurrence of ear infections.

Our 4 Step Wellness Plan discusses these concepts in more detail and the Essential Ear Health Kit includes everything you need to get started including an elimination diet plan for identifying food allergies and intolerances along with the right nutritional supplements to control the toughest chronic ear problems. There is also an Ear Health Kit for Cats.

At Pet NutriSystems we encourage a proactive approach to pet health. It is the best way to get them healthy and keep them healthy. If your dog or cat is experiencing health issues we offer well-researched products and information that give much needed support when your friend needs it most.
