More About Skin Disorders

Skin disorders are by far the most common problems treated by veterinarians. Dogs can manifest a variety of skin problems. The most common include:
  • Dry, flaky skin
  • Hot spots - wet inflamed patches
  • Blisters or other irritation between the toes
  • Itching
  • Formation of scabs or crusts
  • Greasy hair and foul smell
  • Hair loss
Our dog's skin takes assault from all fronts:

From the outside - External parasites, applied chemicals, environmental pollutants, etc.

From the inside - Elimination of toxic material from the body. This is a natural process but if your dog is suffering from poor nutrition, toxic overload or another medical condition, the skin can become overtaxed. Remember, chronic skin problems may indicate a more serious underlying condition.

The most common treatment of skin disorders is corticosteroids. They do usually offer quick temporary relief, but they negatively affect every organ. They can also mask other disease symptoms, delaying treatment. Remember, corticosteroids "push" symptoms inward and do nothing to resolve the underlying condition. Corticosteroids are not recommended for long-term use.

Fortunately, many skin disorders can be remedied through proper nutrition, supplementation and environmental changes. Click here for details of the 3-step wellness plan to proper skin health.

By following the 3-step plan and working with your veterinarian to maintain your dog's overall health, you can ensure your dog has a beautiful coat and healthy skin, without the discomfort of skin problems.
